Some History

Posted by lennoxestate on 6 January, 2008

Historic footnote to the Lennox Estate.

The Lennox Estate was built in 1972 for the Greater London Council (GLC) by

Gollins, Melvin,Ward & Partners. It was constructed on the site that formed part of

the Priory Nursing Home, displacing the Parish’s last herd of cows.

The history of the named tower blocks relates to the daughters of the Duke and Duchess of Richmond.

The land was originally owned by the Lennox family who were Irish aristocrats in the Georgian period,

dating back to 1740 – 1832.

The Duke and Duchess of Richmond had four daughters, Caroline, Emily, Louisa and Sarah. The girls were the

great granddaughters of King Charles II. They were well-educated, bilingual children who were fluent in French.

Their reputation as adults scandalised society. Caroline eloped, Emily gave birth to twenty-one children, of

whom ten survived to adulthood, and Sarah had an affair and was subsequently divorced by her husband.

Fantastic Fireworks Display

Posted by lennoxestate on 6 November, 2007

The Bank of England put on a fireworks display every bonfire night – and it doesn’t disappoint! If you live on the Lennox Estate, you get an absolutely marvelous view of the display, including the massive finale. This year again, the sky lit up, the gunpowder lingered and the firework bombs shook the air in the clear, crisp Sunday, Nov 4th evening.

The locals watched from windows, from the road and from their cars – the 20 minute show was worth every boom! Thanks Bank of England.

Reduced Noise from Cars

Posted by lennoxestate on 13 October, 2007

Being off the main road and not having any through roads means you really don’t get any traffic noise. You are woken up by the bird song early in the morning, so this can be annoying ;) The blackbird are incredible, if you like that sort of thing.

In fact usually its quiet enough to hear the tennis matches going on at the Lawn Tennis Association grounds!

There are various reserach reports that suggest living near a main road increases the chance of children having asthma or breathing related illnesses. So living on this estate could actually be better for your respiratory  health.

Spatial Reasons

Posted by lennoxestate on 7 October, 2007

You get more space for your hard-earned cash. Why? Because most people are snobs and don’t want to live on an ‘estate’. You get more square metres of living space, plus a garden (with some houses and maisonettes). You can park your car for FREE. No parking permits, traffic wardens or such like. In fact the parking is so good that the big 4×4s get plenty of parking when they pick up and drop-off little DewDrop at the nursery at the top of Dowdeswell Close.

There is plenty of outside space for kids to run around and cycle. There are dedicated football cages for containing the more serious games. You can even rent a garage if you feel the need. Some houses come with their own garages.

If you want to engage in large building projects, you can – no problem finding a space for the skip or lorry or van.

In fact, if you try and get the same amount of space elsewhere, you’ll be paying an eye-watering amount, and still not have a safe space for the kids.

Financial Reasons

Posted by lennoxestate on 7 October, 2007

Wandsworth: has one of the cheapest council taxes in the country. Couple that with the properties on the estate being valued at a low band and it’s win-win! Just think what you could do with an extra £1000+ a year. Maybe a holiday or top up your pension. Or just buy some more clothes .. Well I’m sure you’ll know what to do with the extra dosh.

Well you could live anywhere in Wandsworth and benefit from cheaper council tax. So why live on the estate? Hypothetically, lets say you bought a place to live here. It will be cheaper and larger than anything you could afford in the surrounding areas. Thus you’ll have more space for less mortgage and even more spare cash as a result. Dilema again, what to do with extra cash :)

If you are into the whole ‘living below your means’ trip (big on the life blogs), life on the estate is for you …
